Cancellation & Refund Policy
Plans change, weather happens, life happens. Here is how we handle it, fair, transparent, and as flexible as we can be.
Our approach
We are a family-run business and we know what it feels like when a trip does not go as planned. Our cancellation policy is designed to be as flexible as we can reasonably afford, while still protecting the crew and the operations that depend on confirmed bookings. If you ever find yourself in a difficult situation that does not fit cleanly into the policy below, contact us directly. We will work with you.
Group tours (Snorkeling, Sunset, Whale Watching)
This applies to all scheduled group tours where you book individual spots aboard the Zig Zag or Blue Lagoon.
- 72+ hours before departure: Full refund, no fee. Cancel by email, WhatsApp, or phone and we will process the refund to your original payment method within 5 business days.
- 48 to 72 hours before departure: 75% refund. The 25% retained covers operational costs and crew preparation already in motion for your tour.
- 24 to 48 hours before departure: 50% refund. By this point, the boat schedule, food provisioning, and crew assignments are locked in.
- Less than 24 hours before departure or no-show: No refund. This is the standard across the catamaran industry in Cabo San Lucas.
Rescheduling instead of cancelling: If your dates shift but you still want to sail with us, we are happy to reschedule your booking at no charge as long as you let us know at least 24 hours in advance and we can find an alternative date with availability. Reschedules within 24 hours are subject to availability and may incur a small administrative fee.
Private charters and special events
This applies to private bookings of the Zig Zag or Blue Lagoon, including weddings, corporate events, milestone celebrations, and any other exclusive use of the catamarans.
- 14+ days before charter date: Full refund minus a 10% administrative fee. This covers the time already invested in coordinating your custom itinerary, vendor outreach, and reservation holds.
- 7 to 14 days before charter date: 50% refund. By this point, vendor commitments (catering, decor, photography) are typically locked in and partially non-refundable.
- 3 to 7 days before charter date: 25% refund. Most of the cost has already been committed to vendors and crew.
- Less than 72 hours before charter date or no-show: No refund. The boat, crew, and all third-party vendors are fully committed at this point.
Deposits: Private charters require a non-refundable deposit (typically 30% of the total) to confirm the booking. The deposit secures your date on our calendar and starts the vendor coordination. The cancellation tiers above apply to the remaining balance.
For weddings and large events (50+ guests or budgets over $10,000 USD), custom cancellation terms apply and are detailed in the proposal we send you. Lead times for these events are typically longer, and the cancellation windows extend accordingly.
Weather and conditions beyond our control
Cabo San Lucas enjoys around 350 days of sunshine a year, and weather rarely interrupts our tours. When it does, the rules change in your favor:
- If we cancel due to weather, mechanical issues, or any other reason on our end: You receive a full refund, no questions asked. Alternatively, we will reschedule your tour for any date with availability at no additional cost.
- If conditions deteriorate during a tour: We may need to cut the tour short for safety. In that case, we refund the unused portion of the experience prorated or offer a complimentary reschedule.
- Light rain or overcast skies do not cancel tours. Our catamarans are designed for it and our crews know these waters. We will only cancel if conditions become genuinely unsafe.
Hurricane season (June through November): If a named tropical storm or hurricane is forecast to affect Cabo San Lucas during your booked date, we will proactively contact you to reschedule or refund. We monitor weather closely during these months.
Force majeure: Events outside our control, natural disasters, civil unrest, government restrictions, port closures, pandemics, and similar, will be handled with full refund or reschedule at the guest’s preference. We do not impose force majeure to avoid refunds; we use it as a fair framework for handling the unexpected.
How to cancel or reschedule
Send us a message through any of the channels below. Once we receive it, we will confirm the cancellation in writing and process the refund (when applicable) to your original payment method within 5 business days.
- WhatsApp: Fastest. Same-day confirmation typically within hours.
- Email: Best for documentation, especially on larger bookings.
- Phone: Available during business hours.
Please include your booking confirmation number, the date of your tour or charter, and the reason for the change (helps us improve our service over time, but is never required).
All contact details are on our Contact page.
Refund processing
Refunds are issued to the original payment method. Processing times depend on your card issuer or payment provider:
- Credit and debit cards: 5 to 10 business days to appear on your statement.
- PayPal: Typically 1 to 3 business days.
- Bank transfers: 3 to 7 business days, depending on the receiving bank.
If you do not see your refund after the expected window, contact us with your booking number and we will follow up with the payment processor on your behalf.
Modifications to bookings
Need to add or remove a guest, change the departure time, or update a detail of your booking? Most modifications are free if requested at least 24 hours in advance and subject to availability:
- Adding guests: Subject to capacity. Additional guests pay the standard per-person rate.
- Removing guests from a group booking: If your total drops below the booking minimum (where applicable), standard cancellation tiers apply to the removed guests.
- Changing the date or time: Free reschedule with 24+ hours notice. Within 24 hours, subject to availability and a possible administrative fee.
- Changing the tour type: Possible if the price is equivalent or if you cover any price difference. Contact us to discuss.
Special circumstances
We understand that sometimes the standard policy does not fit. The following situations may qualify for flexibility outside the standard tiers:
- Documented medical emergencies (you or an immediate family member) with supporting documentation.
- Bereavement in the immediate family.
- Documented travel disruptions (cancelled flights, denied boarding, visa issues) that prevent you from arriving in Cabo.
- Government travel restrictions issued for your country of origin or for Mexico.
In these cases, contact us as soon as possible with documentation. We will work with you to either fully refund, reschedule, or apply your payment as credit toward a future booking.
A final note
We have written this policy to be clear and fair, but we are not a faceless corporation. If you are reading this because something has gone wrong with your booking, please reach out directly, our contact page is here. Most situations resolve well with a single conversation. We want you to sail with us, not feel trapped by terms and conditions.
Sail Baja Adventures reserves the right to update this policy at any time. Changes apply to bookings made after the “Last Updated” date above. Existing bookings are governed by the policy in effect at the time of booking.
